Score Reading: 4 Staves, 3 Clefs, 2 Hands

These readings employ the vocal tenor clef, which transposes down one octave. Be able to play the four parts simultaneously, and all combinations of two parts (6 possible combinations). This will help you to learn each part well and read harmonically between the staves.

For each example do the following:

  1. Scan the score for position, range, extensions, patterns, chords, common tones, etc.
  2. Decide how you will distribute the parts between your hands.
  3. Plan your fingerings.
  4. Establish a tempo and practice without looking at your hands.
  5. Practice all combinations of two parts; and all four parts simultaneously.
