These reduced staff readings use two hands and require a smooth transition as the melody moves from one hand to the other. You will play only repeated notes, 2nds, and 3rds.
For each example do the following:
- Scan the time signature and rhythms. Tap, chant, or count before playing.
- Notice the direction (up or down) and distance (repeat, 2nd, or 3rd) Practice the motion on a tabletop or in your lap.
- Determine which hand will play and find the starting note for each hand on the keyboard.
- Notice:
- the dynamics (f or p)
- the articulations (legato or staccato)
- other musical symbols such as 8va and 8vb
- Establish a tempo and play without looking at your hands. Tap, chant, or count while playing.
TIP: When reading on a reduced staff, keep your eyes on the music. Looking at your hands makes it harder to read ahead.
