Rhythm

Compound meters have a dotted note as the primary counting unit. 

  • Compound duple meter (6/8) has two primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.
  • Compound triple meter (9/8) has three primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.
  • Compound quadruple meter (12/8) has four primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.

Instructions: 

  1. Watch the instructional video “Compound Meter.”
  2. Practice tapping each rhythm without audio until it feels comfortable.
  3. Choose an audio track from the media playlist.
  4. Listen to the track several times to develop a feel for the style.
  5. Tap the rhythm along with the audio.
