Compound meters have a dotted note as the primary counting unit.
- Compound duple meter (6/8) has two primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.
- Compound triple meter (9/8) has three primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.
- Compound quadruple meter (12/8) has four primary beats, each divided into three smaller beats.
