In this activity, you and a partner will create four “question” and “answer” phrases in 4/4 time using only the black keys and the play-along track “Jazz Swing.” Listen to the track several times so that you feel the progression before you begin.

• Student 1 improvises a 4-measure “question” using any notes of the black key pentatonic scale. The “question” must end on the dominant note, D♭.
• Student 2 improvises a 4-measure “answer” using any notes of the black key pentatonic scale. The “answer” must end on the tonic note, G♭.

Variation: Make the rhythm of the “answer” match the rhythm of the “question” exactly.
